Backs Carve up the Valley
The Old Aztecs resumed D2 action on Saturday in Van Nuys, as they played out a ‘crossover’ fixture with Pool B’s San Fernando Valley. This was a meeting of the two third-placed teams at the halfway point of pool play.
Lucas Edwards captained a side that was missing several key personnel, mostly in the forwards. Skylar Gibson and Steff Crimp made full debuts, with Langston Trapp making his first appearance for the club from the bench.
Good continuity and a willingness to move the ball helped the OAs to tire the home side and avoid an overly physical battle. Excellent link play from the forwards allowed the backs to enjoy their afternoon in SoCal’s saddest city; tries from Breytenbach, Cavallaro, Brouard (2), Ukpe, Niblock (2) and Trapp were all executed decisively, and most had much to do with the service provided by Steff Crimp, who is half the age of most of the rest of the team. A final score of 52-22 and bonus point win cements the OAs position in 3rd place, and edges them slightly closer to Santa Monica, who did beat Pool B’s Eagle Rock, but did not secure a bonus point in doing so.
Attention immediately turns to a D2/D3 double header, with the Old Aztecs facing Oceanside Chiefs and Fullerton this upcoming Saturday at Robb Field. Kickoff times will be announced later this week. Stay tuned.
